Sep 24, 2010 11:30 AM

The humans were all riding southward along the tideline in four ATVs and one OHV. Multiple vehicle tracks were visible along the beach. The birds seemed undisturbed. The driftline was thin and scattered and contained shells, animal casings, kelp/algae and ocean-based debris. Twenty misc. gulls were present plus 21 Snowy Plovers and 6 Sanderlings. Dead birds were 2 Common Murres and 1 Northern Fulmar. Nothing unusual was noted.   MORE

It was a beautiful sunny, windless afternoon at the beach. Such days are rare, especially during the winter. Although vehicle tracks were plentiful, only two ATVs and one street legal were seen, just riding the beach in an allowed area. The driftline was quite wide and composed of lots of wood and grassy debris as well as the usual shells, animal casings, kelp/algae ocean-based debris and Styrofoam. Many sizable logs and smaller hunks had washed out of the eroded sandy beach area. Shells and casings were notably reduced from normal numbers. The erosion had not reached the seawall but had formed a 3 foot vertical wall along about a third of the mile covered. Two dead Northern Fulmars were found, and small numbers of Sanderlings and gulls were present.   MORE

Thirty-seven humans were observed during the hour and one/half spent recording data on the 16 dead birds present(new birds included 9 Common Murre, 1 Northern Fulmar and 4 gulls and two birds were "refound" Common Murre). Several live gulls and a small flock of Sanderlings were seen. All humans were riding ATVs or sandrails, plus one motorcycle. (Some may have been counted more than once.) There were abundant sets of vehicle tracks covering the entire lower portion of the beach. One dog was riding as well. The driftline was sparse, with the usual assortment of shells, casings, wood, kelp and human leavings. The dungeness crab casings so evident on mile 138 were nearly absent on mile 137. Visible amounts of diatoms washed up on the shoreline in places.   MORE

Sharing the beach with other users is a pleasure when the vehicles, pets, and humans are under control and enjoying the same glorious weather. Twelve vehicles included six trucks and six ATVs. Six adults were fishing for surf perch and six were riding or walking for pleasure. The driftline was full of beachgrass eroded from the sea wall, plus some bullkelp and the usual shells, wood and debris. Birds were absent but their tracks were visible around one dead and badly decayed marine mammal. The usual winter erosion features were present with carved out vertical sand faces followed by flatter areas which collected the eroded grasses and wood debris. The vehicle entrance at the north end was too steep for some vehicles.   MORE

The beach area appeared winter normal with wrack present high on the beach in places, and very thin, if any, surf line debris, mostly small wood and a few shells. One vehicle was parked near the entrance on the beach, but no humans were visible. Lots of dog and human footprints, plus four or five sets of vehicle tracks. Gulls, pelicans, surfbirds, shorebirds and a single osprey were observed. One dead skate found.   MORE

A beautiful sunny day at the beach with tolerable wind velocity. Lots of ATV folks were using the area, including several families with multiple vehicles and young children. No signs of concern were evident. The gulls present were occasionally flushed as ATVs passed by, but they resettled immediately. Shells, animal casings and a few dead mole crabs in driftline. Beach was level with some abrupt dropoffs. One dead dark phase Northern Fulmar. Moderate human impact (23)-2 walking, 5 sitting and the remainder in cars/trucks and ATV's in allowed area.   MORE

Sunny day with mild breeze. Beach driftline was barely evident with a few shells, molted casings and the like. Most beachwood was covered by windblown sand, and the entire mile showed a flat sand angle all the way to the seawall. Several vehicle tracks mingled with recent dog and human tracks. The noteworthy item was the lack of kelp masses and other expected drift from recent storms. Low human impact (0).   MORE

Beautiful day at the beach with lots of recreational usage going on by ATV enthusiasts, ORVs and street legal vehicles. Wrackline was mostly continuous with recent deposits of offshore flotsam covered in one inch barnacles. Mostly bullkelp plus other species and wood, bottles, and a few floats. Lots of invertebrate casings, sea stars, sand dolars and other shells also were present. Partial skeletal remains of a sea lion. One dead Common Murre. Heavy human impact (32)-2 walking and 30 riding ATV/OHV/street licenced vehicles in allowed area. Some evidence of fire wood gathering.   MORE
