26 REPORTS FOR MILE 186:
Mile 186
Mar 30, 2013 11:00 AM

We were unable to visit the northern portion, and the largest part, of our mile as we were denied the access we have used for the many years we have visited it. Always with the approval of the RV park we have crossed their lot and gone down to the beach. They said they no longer will be allowing this. We attempted to reach the beach from the area by 10 Mile Creek but were unable to do so. We have been in contact with Phil and will follow up on his suggestions.   MORE

Beach was empty of people and dogs today. Some of the logs close to the bank that have been in place all summer are being rearranged or removed by wave action now. One grey and white bird, smaller than a gull was dead on the beach. Too little of it remained to identify. No litter on the beach. A number of rock cairns have been built on the beach. Some are 3-4 feet tall. No action taken as the tides will remove them soon. Meanwhile they add a pleasing touch.   MORE

Beautiful day with more than the usual number of people enjoying the beach. The beach was as clean as we have ever seen it, extremely clean. For the length of the beach there were lots of logs, some close to the semi-permanent structures at the RV park. (See Photos) Bluff has continued to sluff off in several places, significantly in 3 places.   MORE

Walking mile 186 today we saw not one other person on the beach. The most notable changes were three significant landslides from the bluff. Each of them spilled soil, rocks and vegetation down onto the cobblestones of the beach. The drift line contains many, many tiny pieces of plastic. There were also unusual amounts of small splinters of tree bark, wood, and small branches.   MORE

Beautiful sunny day but very windy. The sand has come back in and the beach appears very clean. Although there were 5 cars parked in the parking area we observed no people or dogs. Other than a few gulls the only birds sighted were 9 pelicans flying over the shoreline. Another permanent-type housing structure has been placed near the beach at the RV park. It is not many feet back from the ocean and on a very low bluff.   MORE

Very quiet day. No birds, relatively clean beach, very little activity. As noted before, a poorly built stairway connects the top of the bluff to the beach. The RV campground is putting in more permanent-type housing(pre-fab rolled in on wheels then placed on foundation)and these dwellings are only a bit higher than the beach.   MORE

Sand has been coming back in but so has debris. North of our mile Bob Creek has car parts in it. There is a rusted propane tank against the bluff and a damaged crab pot. We saw 2 tires, one in front of the parking lot and one half way up the beach. The RV park has built 3 permanant-type dwellings in the parking lot close to the water. Not a single bird was seen.   MORE

A beautiful day and the beach was very clean. In the years we have visited mile 186 we have never seen so few birds or so much sand swept out. Some places on the beach were so low that the water formed ponds in the underlying foundation. Rocks covered the upper half of the beach. Two places on the bluff have been altered, steps were cut into the bluff, wood put into place to allow access. The RV park is placing permanent-type housing in the lot.   MORE

Lots of sand has come in making the beach the cleanest we have ever seen and the 70 degree day made it the warmest. Due to the closure of the parking at 10 Mile Creek, from the sand build- up, there were no people on that section of the mile. There were 10 people north of the creek. 3 dead terns and another tern dying. A number of jellies and sea roaches in the drift line.   MORE

A very quiet, clear day with very strong winds. The beach was clean, with the exception of many water bottles at the high tide line. The only change was a small amount of bluff sluffing at the northern end of the mile. No live birds were observed but we saw 5 dead gulls and 1 dead crow. The rebuilt RV Park is open for business and a few of the spaces were occupied.   MORE

The sand was so low that rocks that are not visible in the summer were not only visible but many feet tall. South of Ten Mile Creek the loss of sand exposed cobbles. Dead sea lion was reported to the State Park representative. Large pieces of styrofoam had been tossed against the bluffs by the waves. We collected bags of the pieces and much was left. A local property owner told us that when it first started showing up some pieces were as large as refrigerators.   MORE

Access blocked to beach south of Ten Mile Creek. Many construction vehicles and workers on the bridge. North of the creek so much sand is gone that huge rocks were exposed that we have never observed before. The lot next to the RV park is occupied by a very large 3 vehicle(RV)garage and there was equipment working which indicates a house is going to be built closer to the small bluff.   MORE
