23 REPORTS FOR MILE 204:
Doug & Jan
Jan 7, 2013 3:00 PM

The wind was strong.... perhaps 30 mph. We walked south to begin our mile, walking from Drift Creek to Bayshore. There were many waterways to ford. The sand was wet from high tide all the way to the bluff. The strong winds were blowing the wet sand at beach level and visibly to the north. On the way back north, I kicked a broken styrofoam boat bumper and it travel north so fast I am sure it was in Newport for dinner time. The new bluff erosion was right where Drift Creek enters the beach. Unfortunately we do not yet have our 2013 tide book. But I know the high tides that evening and the next day were extremely high. All in all, another interesting and enjoyable walk on a very very blustery day.   MORE

The sun was out, the blue sky was decorated with a few fluffy white clouds. The temperature was mile with no wind. We were just enjoying ourselves! As were the other 30 people we saw, the most we have ever seen on this beach since we have been walking it. The tide was quite a ways out so there was lots of clean, smooth , hard sand to walk on.   MORE

This is a very stable beach. I find the usual woody debris and not much else. Good vegetation on the hillsides and not alot of visible changes. 9 people strolling the beach, a few playing with a dog, a couple of photographers.   MORE

It was a most interesting walk. The sun was out, but the wind a bit strong to be comfortable. The large number of birds was fascinating. And the gal photographing the stranded seal pup was very giving with her information. A very curious and scientific adventure!   MORE

This was a gorgeous walk on an early spring morning. The sun came in and out of the clouds and the wind was minimal. The beach was wide, flat, and extremely clean. Notably devoid of logs, kelp, etc. One of the reasons we wanted to walk our mile was to determine if the tsumani wave had done any damage. If anything, the high water cleaned the beach. It was a beautiful day!   MORE

We were excited to walk our mile on this day of wonderful weather following yesterday's storm. The surf was fluffy and white with large balls of white foam on the shore that were drifting south. Other beach walkers seem to be enjoying it as much as we were. There were more dead birds than we usually see. Probably the result of yesterdays storm. And, I do not think I would have noticed the dead sea lion if I had not been traversing the driftwood. My foot stepped on it, thinking it was a log. It was not a firm foot hold, so I looked down. The animal was not decaying and did not smell. The regular surging of the northern creek seemed perculiar. It was a glorious day for a very nice walk   MORE

It was a wonderful sunny lst day of summer. A bit too chilly to sit on the beach. The beach was especially wide, flat, and clean. The high tide had recently been all the way to the bluff so the sand was not soft and there were only a very few very small "dunes". It was an easy and very pretty walk. And it was fun to see so many others walking and enjoying the day.   MORE

The beach was calm and clean of debris. No seabirds present. The only birds were vultures eating two, apparently headless, dead, baby seals that had washed up appx. 1/2 mile apart.   MORE

Beach very clean, very little debris, no dead animals, or birds. 25-30 people (adults and children) enjoying the beach, 5 leashed dogs. A flock of gulls and 3 wimbrels or curlews on the shore. Both north and south of parking lot there is considerable sand drift and duning of loose sand between tide line and cliffs. Apx 1/2 mile south of parking lot is an area at base of cliff that is leaching some unknown bright red liquid in several places. Photos attached.   MORE

Sunny day, low tide, not much wind. About a dozen people and 3 dogs observed. No seabirds present, only crows. 3 large plastic bags picked up. A cruise ship passed heading north - seemed close to shore. Some type of dark residue noticed on top sand, mostly in drained recessed areas.   MORE

Our biggest observations were two-fold. The huge number of small feathers in the tide lines and the total change in the surface of the beach from many wind rippled mounds to just the opposite: many large, wide shallow depressions filled with water.   MORE
