11 REPORTS FOR MILE 208:

Aug 5, 2012 9:30 AM

The beach was mostly clean; there were a few bits of crumpled styrofoam near the end of the mile, and a few picnic litter items. No evidence of tsunami debris. People are burning the large tree stump that has been slowly moving north along the beach for over a decade.   MORE

Fishing line on rocks
Description:Several of the rocks with barnacles and mussels had fishing line embedded among the shells. I tried to pull it out, but it was firmly attached to the barnacles and mussels. It could be removed with scissors or a knife.

It was a warm day with little wind. Lots of families were clustered near the entrance to the beach, sitting on the sand or on logs. The number of people dwindled once I moved south of the park entrance. Some families were playing in the surf. Two men were fishing. I saw considerable erosion at one house that I noticed had letters carved in the sandstone last year. The house looks abandoned. A few other homes seem to be getting closer to the edge of the cliff, also. There wasn't much on the beach, perhaps because it was high tide. Some areas had clusters of small stones and shells. Further south I saw some debris that included small pieces of plastic. A few drink containers were left on the beach, but otherwise, it was clean of litter.   MORE

Landslide
Description:Sandstone has fallen from this cliff as large boulders. There seems to be a face of harder rock, that is becoming exposed. I don't remember seeing it before.

Wandering tree stump
Description:This tree stump has been moving north for the past dozen years or more. I first saw it south of the Curtis Street parking area. It is now considerably north of there, and has been hacked at with chain saws and burned. Someone carved "Stop Burning" into the side.

It was a beautiful, sunny day, with a mild breeze. Lots of families were on the beach, picnicking, playing frisbee, walking, and fishing. I noticed some dead sand crabs in the shore debris, and a few bits of fishing line and plastic bags. Some of the cliffs had carvings in the sandstone, and there was some erosion under the carvings.   MORE

I walked my mile 208 -- as well as 207 this day -- as they comprise my commuter route [now] to the bus stops at Seal Rock State Park and Ona Beach! The wrack line was rich -- especially in the remains of marine life. Seems there is more sea palm on the beach than usual -- darn and it's edible! 3 beached common murres. Picture of 37 inch "young of the year" salmon shark that was barely alive on the beach in the surf line at ~7PM. I returned later to measure and take pictures. Enjoy the sun CWers!   MORE

Under cover of a light fog this mature bald eagle feasted on a probable gull; making quick work of it in 15 minutes, while several crows and turkey vultures approached and respectfully watched and waited.   MORE

A toilet hanging over the bluff for a month seems obnoxious (2 houses south of Curtis Street wayside north of Seal Rock) I still find the dumping of trees, branches, garden vegetation, etc.over the bluffs unsightly, misinformed? and, well, seemingly a touch indolent .. Yet on the marine side, a joyous profusion of spring life: 2 Steller sea lions on offshore island, 5 harbor seals lolling in close, Black Brant, Harlequin Duck, Dunlin, Pigeon Guillemot, Killdeer, Black Oystercatcher, Brown Pelican, Red-necked Phalarope, Semipalmated Plover, Black Bellied Plover, Sanderling, Black and Surf Scoter, Surfbird, Terns flying, Black & Ruddy Turnstone, and Whimbrel all in breeding plumage and all apparently numerous, to my experience, met the eye of my binoculars and camera!   MORE

2 pebble beds up drawing many agate hunters. Bluff erosion seems stable but erosion at Ona Beach. where Beaver Creek high and re-routed. Usual black & surf scoters and sanderlings present in winter. Old dead harbor seal washed up. Lots of broken shells in driftline. Few dead gulls. Otherwise storms washed beach clean; much sand gone and bedrock exposed.   MORE

I was in Africa most of August .. The sand did not come entirely back in this summer. But several substantial sand castles since Labor Day and "forts" made of driftwood! Beaver Creek down to ~6 foot diameter and ankle deep reaching ocean. 4 brown pelicans flew north. Report at 9:30 am but returned to beach at 7:30 pm to note campfire and a lone great blue heron further south.   MORE

7-7-7 at 7 pm Peregrine Falcon picnicking on beach
Description: I did not scare it off its prey; but some fishermen did later, even though I alerted them, saying a peregrine was eating his catch for dinner :-) I imagine the yellow mackintosh spooked it, though they tried to give the falcon a wide birth on the beach; just about at high tide (8.3) I saw the falcon also on 6/24 .. easily defending its prey from a mature turkey vulture .. just with glances .. Like this one it cast in my direction! However I was safely behind the camera lens and didn't see it ;-) KittyB

This was the morning the gray whale washed ashore. State Parks vehicle down on beach early. Been observing & recording steller sea lions on 2 offshore islands since April 3. On May 16 reported 14 dove when boat approached. Pretty certain I saw 1-5 marbled murrelets in ocean past month. (Later on June 5 a steller sea lion also washed up, ust about on top of the first burial site of the whale. I measured it (12 feet) and emailed Jim Rice. He was here within the hour and removed it. I believe it was a male, not dead long. And yes, I have photos of the whale and the sea lion.)    MORE
