Human activities: total of 35 people seen walking, walking 5 dogs, 2 riding bicycles and 6riding horses. Shoreline: Wood pieces not as large as seen in March. Couldn't tell if an item we saw repeatedly was coated wire or vine. Foam at a few water outlets looked like eggs in it. Took some photos. Physical Changes: Erosion in one area south of Henderson Creek & north of beach access at Surfland Private Beach access seems to be getting worse. But plants/grasses seem to be helping to stabilize it. Don't remember one pipe outlet.   MORE

This area is the part of the mile definitely needing observations since it seems it is less visited by humans. The erosion needs to be monitored/photographed. Photos should have been taken of the concentrated areas of tree parts in the driftline around Henderson Creek. There was even what we thought was a telephone pole.   MORE

I actually walked miles 214, 213, 212 and 211. The heavy rains over the weekend (5.4 in. in 36 hours at HMSC) caused many slumps and sluffs along mile 212 and the southern portion of 213. Several were quite large. I've attached a few photos.   MORE

A surprisingly calm and pleasant late afternoon to be on the beach. No birds at all except for one flock of small birds in low flight. Small bunches of bright seaweed spaced along the tide line and the one large elongated deposit of kelp with the cement like pieces in it.   MORE

It was surprising that there were no indications of the recent heavy storm. Did find a heavy plastic 5 gal. (?) container with a name and phone #. Phoned the owner to tell them where it had washed up. Sidenote: While walking at Lost Creek, I believe it was Dec. 3, there was a large, injured and dying squid on the beach just north of the creek.   MORE

Reports from OSU researchers.. earliest ever start date for upwelling and evidence of great productivity offshore. large schools of bait fish, with large pod of dolphins and killer whales in the area. Also sighting of sea birds from Antarctic which is very rare. Productivity may impact our beaches with sea foam. Sand is returning and starting to cover extensive cobble bed that attracted rock hounds. Wreaths from fleet of flowers has washed in on my mile in great numbers. Disintegration has started and will soon be gone.   MORE

The length of Mile 213 is 70% high sand stone cliffs the bases of which have been scoured clean by big waves. 30% of the mile is vegetated cliffs with narrow low plateaus of flat areas that rise just above the beach. During these past two years there has been a return of piles of drift wood to the northern 40% of the beach and drift wood thrown onto the low plateaus by powerful storms. The return of the drift wood is a new phonemena as the beach has been clear of wood for quite a long time.   MORE

Big balls of kelp were gone today, and even more wood was strewn on the beach. Several pieces of yellow rope, miscellaneous small plastic items, a large plastic tub-like item (almost bathtub size), an item that looked rather like a rectangular table top. Again today, an eagle came and did a few circles over us.   MORE
