Observed high tide (King Tide) at 11:50 a.m. 12/14/2012. Partly sunny with light wind. Occasional big waves sending spray above shoreline path at Little Whale Cove residential area. In Little Whale Cove, this 10.6 foot high tide clearly breaches basalt lip of the cove.   MORE

Beautiful fall day between storms. Lots of woody material and kelp at upper part of beach, indicating a very high surf/tide event in recent past. Three seagulls bathing in Little Whale Cove at time of visit.   MORE

It’s a beautiful sunny day at the beach with little wind. All along mp229 all is quiet except for an occasional person or couple, generally with a dog or two on leash, taking a stroll along the oceanfront on the LWC path. There is nothing unusual to report along most of the mile. There are several Styrofoam floats stranded high & dry on the rocks in a cleft near the north end of the Little Whale Cove development , but little else of anything human-made. Last year I saw two Canada geese in Little Whale Cove. Today there were four adults and seven goslings hanging out in the cove.   MORE

Lots of whale watching activity by small boats from Depoe Bay. About six to twelve whales commonly spotted 1/4 to 1/2 mole offshore of Milepost 229. Healthy looking kelp beds immediately offshore of the rocky bluff along much of this mile. Harbor seals often sighted in the kelp beds. Also lots of seagulls and many flights of brown pelicans north and south skimming over the water near the shore.   MORE

Saw and photographed a great blue heron. It was first seen fishing in small pool of water beneath a log. These herons often seek food (fish) in areas where fresh and salt water are close by, as is the case in the cove.   MORE

We noted several concerns with newly-developed property at Little Whale Cove. The Property manager stated that there were State Lands people she could bring in to talk to the property owner. This had been effective in previous situations of similar nature.   MORE

A local beach cleanup was held on Sunday, June 17, so there is very little to report in the way of debris in the cove. Most of the logs that had come in over the past quarter were cut and burned, with a few purposely left on the beach, including the douglas fir log that was the topic of some discussion in April. Most logs are burned to keep them from washing up into the creeks that empty into the cove, which would disrupt creek water flows and possibly create flooding. Very few people in this area have wood burning fireplaces; most have gas fireplaces to avoid air pollution. A summary of the contact with the Coast Guard and Custom Agent regarding the douglas fir log in the cove was submitted in April, 2007. The only photo of interest I took was the one taken June 11 of the seafoam along the water line (responding to the sighting by Kitty Brigham). An attempt to upload the photo to the CW web site was not successful (rejected due to size). Also sent a photo of the douglas fir log in April, responding to a request by Curtis Ebbesmeyer. ------------   MORE
