A very quiet time @ the beach, only a few people, with beach fairly clean. Sand has shifted, some drift wood is covered, although much remains. Have found some plastic bottles from Japan in the past, but this visit just noticed styrofoam.   MORE

An excellent hike. Very little trash found. We did encounter a gigantic bull sea lion -- we went one way, and he went the other. No seals seen, but plenty of evidence that they continue to use the area -- body drag marks, etc. Very nice to find another hiker who said that he, and others, also pick up litter out there and even take away my full bags. This may be where my stuff goes if I bag it and stash it, then can't find it later! We really can't take large floats out without a lot of hillside erosion, so we toss them back in the drink, and they will eventually wash up in a place that is safer and easier for someone to get them off the coastline. It's just too difficult and erosive to continue to haul them up ourselves. This will be my last report until next spring, as there are no more low tides in 2010 to permit me to get around the headlands into the coves.   MORE

Almost directly in front of our family beach cabin in North Rockaway Beach, I discovered a dead fish. Apparently an adult salmon of one species or another. Corpse is almost completely intact except for the eyes. (We get almost NO washed-in large marine life of ANY type.) Cause of death not apparent. It is probably an anomaly, but in case we get more, or in case there are others that wash in on other miles, I thought I'd post it.   MORE

Found the corpse of a ray or skate washed up. Very unusual for this area. Body was perhaps 18-24 inches front to back (not including the tail and 30-36 inches wide. No apparent cause of death, a little decay but not much.   MORE

Found seal pup on beach. Called local police station, and the volunteer at the desk notified the local wildlife network. As I returned from my walk, a state parks person was at the scene and an adult seal had just returned to pick up and swim off with the pup.   MORE

The beach continues to have large logs/driftwood on it, making walking to shoreline difficult. Dead pelican noted among the driftwood.   MORE

Beautiful day. Many areas where beach grasses have been 'mowed'. Not sure if this is appropriate or not; will try to find out. After seeing 2 dead Humboldt squid on our mile, we heard that this has been considerable especially in Astoria.   MORE

Beautiful weather. Lots of folks arriving for Thanksgiving weekend. About 1/2 dozen dead birds sighted in the sand. They aren't sea gulls but not sure what species.   MORE

Overall the beach looks much more like it did 4 years ago when we first began walking along it. The sand is more level and less debris on the shore with no sightings of any dead animals, the weather was too good to be true.. global warming???   MORE

Quiet - saw bald eagle and also osprey flying over ocean. Very few seagulls - beach appears to be returning after sand loss this winter.   MORE
