Three of the six people digging for clams were involved in digging, the others were watching. The beach was clean. There were some clam shells on the beach along with several sand dollars. The low tide exposed much more sand than normal. See picture.   MORE

More sand than usual this time of year. Clean beach. Much more sand also North of the Arch Cape. Increased erosion below 79544 Ray Brown Road, as well as below 31849 Clatsop Lane stretching South to below31841 Clatsop lane. A basement door in 31849 Clatsop Lane was wide open (seemingly forced open), no one was home, so I closed it. No murres or other birds yet on the Gull Rocks.   MORE

A different looking float has washed on shore. It is about six feet by three feet by two and one half feet. The corners are broken off exposing the styrofoam core. It has a smooth cement coating that is about 3/4 inch thick. The coating is thicker on the corners. Some shell fragments are still attached. There are no markings on the float. This may be from Japan. I took two pictures. I will attach the photos when I get back to Beaverton on 3/4/13. The float is located about 1/4 mile north of the Clatsop Lane access trail in Cove Beach. It is on the rocks below the bluff with the yellow house. It is far enough away from the ocean that it will not be washed away.   MORE

I observed the King tide. It was windy and cool with some sun breaks. The high tide did not reach the high levels I have seen when there is a storm surge at high tide. The shoreline looked normal. There was very little debris other than small pieces of drift wood. There are two bluff areas that normally see small landslides after heavy rain. There were several small slides at these bluff areas.   MORE

Most of the beach looked normal. The only change I saw was dark streaks on the sand at the south end of mile 307. There were streaks and dark areas over an area about 100 yards long north to south and up to 40 feet wide east to west. The stains were in the sand to a depth between 1/4 to 1/2 inch in depth. I guess that the stains were from an oil spill.   MORE

I have not seen so much sand in and around the Arch Cape in decades. At a +0.4 tide one can easily walk around the outside (west) side of the Cape. The Cove beach side has much sand deposited as well, covering most beach rocks. Healthy abundant mussel growth. Few sea birds, some pelicans on the Bird Rocks.   MORE

The shoreline rock berm has been reshaped by the ocean. Two areas had rocks removed allowing the high tide waves to erode the soil bluffs. Bluff erosion was mininal. Some styrofoam, misc. plastic and three plastic floats were collected. One of the floats was made in China. One bald eagle was observed later in the day.   MORE

Erosion of the bluff seems main concern. Clearcutting of large tracts of land almost directly in back ( to the East) of these slides may or may not have contributed to this. The bluffs are unstable in their layers of clay and sand when winters are wet.   MORE
