| 3 | | | New Acorn barnacles, Aggregating Sea Anemones |
|---|
| Description: | Large patches of rock previously covered with elderly mussels and barnacles (at left in photo) were stripped bare by winter waves. Since then, most bare rock in mid-intertidal has been colonized by Aggregating Sea Anemone Anthopleura elegantisima, which you see here on the right with their protective layer of sand, shell bits, and fine gravel. As you can see, much of the rest of the bare rock, as well as existing barnacles and mussels, have more recently been colonized by a new cohort of 2mm-diameter Acorn Barnacles Balanus glandula. | | Date: | 06/18/2010 |
