From the Archives: Curry: U.S.Borax  Feb 1 09 -- Mar 30 09  Update on U.S.Borax Lone Ranch in Brookings Harris Beach State Park, November 2007 U.S. Borax owns more than 500 acres of forested land which is directly across Highway 101 from Harris Beach State Park in Curry County. The land is now in the city of Brookings, with the Lone Ranch Master Plan of Development completed for it that will allow 1,000 houses on the property. However, there has been great controversy over this proposal from the very beginning. Most recently, controversy has centered on whether or not Borax can get an extension from the City for the time in which the Master Plan will apply — or whether they need to start over. Recently, the City of Brookings planning commission denied U.S. Borax the time extension it requested, on grounds that the city ordinance only allows an extension past the initial four years if there have been no changes in circumstances; there have in fact been significant changes in this case, ranging from availability of city water to cost of electricity. But the Brookings City Council granted Borax the time extension. Oregon Shores has appealed to the Land Use Board of Appeals, which will decide on the case sometime Spring of 2009.
