Military training and testing in the ocean off Oregon’s coast will be the subject of two “open houses” offered by the U.S. Navy, among nine to be held up and down the West Coast. The Navy is taking comments on the environmental impact statement (EIS) it has drafted to cover its military exercises offshore.
The two Oregon meetings will be Monday, March 19 at the Tillamook County Fairgrounds, and Tuesday, March 20 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Each meeting will run 5-8 p.m.
The EIS is a weighty document that describes potential impacts to marine life and ecosystems of faux-combat with real weapons, and attempts to explain how the Navy will protect the environment and recreational and commercial activities while preparing for war.
To read the EIS and comment online, go to the website the Navy has set up for this.
