| Fri May 7 -- May 8 2010 Coast Conference Features Big Changes | Photographer Gary Braasch Oregon Shores’ annual Coast Conference, coming to Coos Bay this year for the first time, will feature a stellar line-up of speakers, a special cruise exploring the Coos Bay estuary and the first-ever training session under the new Coastal Master Naturalist Program.
It all takes place May 7-8, and aside from the cruise, a fund-raising event for Oregon Shores, the Conference is free and open to all. (Bring a lunch, or eat in the cafeteria on the premises.) Please extend an invitation to anyone who cares about the coast’s future.
This year’s theme is “Oregon’s Coast: Changes Coming,” and our speakers will focus on the profound implications of climate change for the coastal landscape and environment, and on how we can respond. (Complete conference agenda)
The conference will kick off Friday evening, May 7, 7 p.m., with a slide talk by famed photographer Gary Braasch, author of the book Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming Is Changing the World. Braasch’s talk, "A World of Changes -- Nature and Climate under Global Warming," updates the photography and research he did for his book. His images and observations are drawn from around the world, but he will also bring the story down to a focus on the Oregon coast. Sharing the bill will be Roger Hamilton of the University of Oregon’s Climate Leadership Initiative, who will give a brief talk on climate modeling for the Rogue River basin.
This event takes place in Eden Hall on the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus.
Saturday’s session, at the Hales Center for the Performing Arts, begins at 9:30 a.m. (registration at 9). Among the many speakers will be geologist Curt Peterson, speaking on sand movement and erosion and how these are likely to be affected by global warming; Laura Mattison of DLCD Peter Ruggiero, a geoscientist at Oregon State University, on changes in wave heights and currents and the most vulnerable areas of Oregon’s coast; Mark Hixon, an OSU marine ecologist, on biological changes taking place on the ocean and how this relates to marine reserves; Lesley Ewing of the California Coastal Commission on how our neighbor to the south is planning for sea level rise; mayor Lori Hollingsworth of Lincoln City on how her city is striving for sustainability; marine mammalogist Bruce Mate on whales and how they may be affected by wave energy development; and many more.
Our CoastWatch section has the details on the Coastal Master Naturalist training Friday afternoon. A brief, official annual meeting for Oregon Shores members will be held at 9:15 on Saturday, and our cruise around Coos Bay will bring the conference to a delightful conclusion.

The time has almost arrived for our wide-ranging, jam-packed and somewhat experimental “Sharing the Coast Conference,” coming up August 15-17 at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport. Together with our co-sponsors, the Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME), we have designed an event devoted not only to learning about coastal and ocean natural history, but to sharing it with ...
